While I got to know Sophie in her capacity as my honors class teacher, she has helped me throughout my academic journey, going far beyond the classroom.

Her talent for, and genuine interest in, the topics she teaches is clear from the moment you step into her classroom, and is inescapable and infectious to her students. Having recently been a student herself results in Sophie being an incredibly empathetic and understanding person. Due to her openness to queries from students and her approachableness, she is not just a teacher standing in front of a class, but a mentor, to myself and others.

Sophie’s knowledge of studying and working in academia makes her the perfect person to reach out to for any students wondering what their next steps could be and how to navigate this sometimes daunting world of academia.

Cécile Lorrillard

MA student in International Governance and Diplomacy, Sciences Po Paris

I got to know Sophie while she was teaching in a minor program that I followed online, during my last year of bachelor’s at Leiden University, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout this unpredictable and overwhelming period, I have found her to be an amazing support. Her enthusiasm for learning, her dedication to her students, and her unwavering belief in the power of knowledge have shaped my perspective and outlook on life.

Sophie has inspired me to trust my abilities, take risks, exceed my expectations, and create my own path beyond the classroom. She has shown me that it is possible to create meaningful change in a world that is in need of new ideas and perspectives. Her support has clearly played a major role in helping me reach a place that my twenty-year-old self would have hardly imagined.

I am grateful for her guidance and mentorship.

What kind of issues can academic coaching address?

Academic coaching is tailored to the student’s needs and wishes. It is unique for each individual and can, for example, help with:

  1. Learning Disabilities and Special Needs: Academic coaches can offer support to students with learning disabilities, ADHD, or other special needs. They can help students access appropriate accommodations, understand their learning styles, and develop strategies tailored to their unique challenges.

  2. Transition to College/University: The transition from high school to college or university can be daunting. Academic coaches guide students through this adjustment period, offering insights on expectations, time management, and study techniques suitable for higher education.

  3. Holistic Student Development: Beyond academics, academic coaches take a holistic approach to student development. They address issues related to stress management, self-care, and work-life balance to ensure students thrive both academically and personally.

  4. Cultural Sensitivity: In a diverse academic environment, coaches often have training in cultural sensitivity. They can help international or multicultural students navigate cultural differences and language barriers, ensuring a smooth academic journey.

  5. Graduate School and Career Preparation: For students considering graduate school, academic coaches provide comprehensive assistance, from selecting programs and preparing application materials to honing interview skills. They also offer career planning guidance, helping students align their academic pursuits with their future aspirations.

  6. Motivation and Confidence Building: Building students’ motivation and self-confidence is a core aspect of coaching. Coaches employ positive psychology techniques and encouragement to help students overcome self-doubt and setbacks.

  7. Goal-Oriented Approach: Academic coaches use a goal-oriented approach, helping students set clear, achievable objectives. They break down larger goals into manageable steps, tracking progress along the way.

  8. Accountability: Coaches provide a level of accountability that can motivate students to stay on track. Regular check-ins and goal assessments ensure students remain focused on their academic journey.

In essence, an academic coach serves as a multifaceted mentor and guide, adapting their approach to meet the unique needs of each student, aiming not only to enhance academic performance but also to foster personal growth and success in all aspects of life.

Common misconceptions about academic coaching

Let’s debunk five common misconceptions about academic coaching:

  1. Misconception: Academic Coaching Is Only for Struggling Students
Reality: Academic coaching is not just for students who are struggling academically. It benefits students at all levels, including high achievers. Coaches can help high-performing students further excel, set and achieve ambitious goals, and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

  2. Misconception: Academic Coaches Provide All the Answers
Reality: Coaches don’t give students all the answers. Instead, they empower students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Coaches ask questions, offer guidance, and help students explore solutions on their own.

  3. Misconception: Academic Coaching Is Only About Study Skills
Reality: While study skills are a part of academic coaching, it’s not limited to them. Coaches address a wide range of issues, including time management, goal setting, stress management, career planning, and personal development. Coaching takes a holistic approach to student success.

  4. Misconception: Academic Coaching Is Only for Students in Crisis
Reality: Academic coaching is beneficial for students at any stage of their academic journey, from high school through graduate school. It can help students proactively set and achieve goals, improve their academic performance, and develop lifelong learning skills.

  5. Misconception: Academic Coaches Are Tutors
Reality: While tutors focus on specific subject matter and provide direct instruction, academic coaches focus on developing students’ skills, strategies, and mindset for learning. They help students become more effective and independent learners, regardless of the subject.

In summary, academic coaching is a versatile and proactive approach that can benefit students of all backgrounds and abilities. It’s not just about addressing academic difficulties but also about fostering personal growth, enhancing study skills, and preparing students for long-term success.

What is the difference between academic coaching and tutoring?

Academic Coaching takes a holistic, long-term approach, focusing on skill development, time management, and personal growth, helping students achieve academic and life goals. It cultivates skills like study techniques, metacognition, and goal setting, with an eye on lifelong learning. Personalized and motivational, it builds not just academic competence but also confidence.

Tutoring is more specific, targeting particular academic subjects to address immediate challenges. Tutors clarify concepts, answer queries, and provide practice. It’s geared toward short-term goals, like excelling in a course or test, rather than broader skill development.

In essence, coaching nurtures a comprehensive skill set for life, while tutoring provides subject-specific support for immediate academic needs. Both have distinct advantages, catering to the unique goals and challenges of students.

Why choose academic coaching over tutoring?

Opting for Academic Coaching over tutoring offers several compelling advantages:

  1. Comprehensive Skill Development: Academic coaching goes beyond subject-specific support. It equips you with valuable skills like effective study techniques, time management, and goal setting, enhancing your ability to excel across all subjects and in various life pursuits.

  2. Lifelong Learning: Coaching fosters a mindset for lifelong learning. It empowers you with strategies to become a better learner, adapt to new challenges, and continue growing academically and personally.

  3. Personalized Approach: Coaches tailor their guidance to your unique needs, learning style, and goals. This personalized support ensures that you receive precisely the assistance required for your individual journey.

  4. Motivation and Confidence: Academic coaching focuses on building your motivation and self-confidence, vital for overcoming academic hurdles and achieving long-term success.

  5. Long-Term Goals: Coaching extends its reach to long-term academic and career aspirations. It helps you set and work towards these objectives, shaping your future path.

  6. Life Skills: Beyond academics, coaching addresses life skills like organization, communication, and problem-solving, preparing you for success in various aspects of life.

In contrast, tutoring primarily offers subject-specific support, focusing on immediate academic challenges. While valuable, tutoring tends to be narrower in scope, concentrating on the content of a particular subject.

Ultimately, choosing academic coaching signifies a commitment to holistic development, lifelong learning, and personal growth, providing you with enduring skills and strategies that extend far beyond the classroom.

What to expect and not to expect from an academic coach?

What to Expect from an Academic Coach:

  1. Custom-made Guidance: An academic coach will provide personalized support tailored to your unique needs, goals, and challenges.

  2. Skill Development: Expect assistance in developing essential skills such as time management, study techniques, and effective communication.

  3. Goal Setting: Your coach will help you set and work towards academic and career goals, ensuring you have a clear roadmap for your future.

  4. Motivation and Accountability: Coaches will motivate you and hold you accountable for your academic progress, helping you stay on track even during challenging times.

  5. Holistic Approach: Academic coaches often address both academic and life skills, promoting a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.

  6. Long-Term Growth: Expect support not only for immediate challenges but also for long-term personal and academic growth.

What Not to Expect from an Academic Coach:

  1. Tutoring: An academic coach is not a subject-specific tutor. They may offer study strategies but won’t provide in-depth instruction on specific academic subjects.

  2. Instant Solutions: Improvement takes time and effort. Don’t expect immediate or miraculous results; progress often comes through consistent work.

  3. Academic Writing Services: While coaches can provide feedback on academic writing, they are not ghostwriters or editors. They won’t complete assignments for you.

  4. Psychological Counseling: Academic coaches are not therapists. While they can address stress and motivation, they are not qualified to provide therapy or counseling services.

  5. Guaranteed Success: Success depends on your efforts and commitment. A coach can guide you, but ultimate success is in your hands.

  6. Personal Issues: While academic coaches can discuss work-life balance, they are not equipped to address deep personal issues. Seek appropriate professionals for such concerns.

Understanding these expectations will help you make the most of your academic coaching experience, focusing on your growth and progress.
