Probably the most iconic Mexican dish, tacos are small tortillas filled with meat and/or vegetables in myriads of combinations, often accompanied by fresh pico de gallo and salsas. The most famous Mexican tacos include tacos al pastor (rotisserie pork with pineapple), arrachera (beef flank), and suadero (beef brisket). This article guides you through the best tacos in Tulum, featuring authentic restaurants using fresh and local ingredients.
Taquería Honorio
It can be tricky to navigate the many taquerías of the centre of Tulum, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. Taquería Honorio differentiates itself from the rest by offering an authentic taco experience with fresh, quality ingredients and strict hygiene.
Menu
The menu features tacos, tortas, quesadillas, and guacamole. All the classics, no frills. The filling options are typical of the Yucatán and include pork, turkey, chicken, and veggie mixes. You can buy tacos by the unit, therefore I recommend trying a combination (my favourite is cochinita pibil) together with one of their fresh waters – a Mexican staple. Tacos start at 22 pesos (1€) the unit.
Practical Tips
This is a popular lunch spot: expect a queue and lots of locals. Give your name to the staff at the entrance upon arrival then wait in line. Arrive no later than 13:00, or you may be left with some items off the menu!
La Cordobesita
La Cordobesita is a vegan tacos food truck. Originally from Argentina, the owners have specialised in the art of vegan Mexican delicacies. It’s a popular spot for tourists and locals, located in one of the top tacos hotspots.
Menu
On the menu, you’ll find a variety of street food, including: tacos, quesadillas. and tortas with various fillings. They also serve pizzas, burgers, hot dogs, as well as a range of drinks and desserts. Everything is 100% plant-based.
Practical Tips
The food truck opens at 6PM until 2AM or until stock finishes. On weekends and during high season, it’s likely that stock will finish around 1AM. This spot is perfect for an after-party snack.
Puro Corazón
If you are looking for an authentic dinner with a view, Puro Corazón is a your spot! This gem located at the start of the hotel zone features a rooftop bar, which makes it easily accessible yet hidden from the street. Intimate sunset vibes guaranteed.
Menu
They offer five types of tacos: fish, octopus, shrimp, beef, and veggie. My favourites are the tacos de pulpo, grilled and accompanied by a punzu sauce, cheese, and fresh coriander. They also offer delicious cocktails, burritos, and some starters including homemade fried potato wedges. Tacos start at 180 pesos (8€) for a set of four units.
Practical Tips
The small rooftop is at the back of the restaurant. Once you come in, go straight to the tower of stairs after the bathrooms. It fills up quickly at sunset, so make sure to arrive on time if you want to secure a spot.
La Taquería
This outdoor restaurant is located in La Veleta (although they also have two locations in the hotel zone). La Taquería has a deliciously fresh menu and a vibrant atmosphere, with Jenga games on all tables for clients to play with. La TaquerÍa is organised in various seating areas, offering different options based on the mood and group size.
Menu
The menu features tacos, burritos, fajitas, and nachos. My favourite tacos in this spot are the arrachera (beef steak) and pulpo (octopus). They all come per unit or in orders of four units with some guacamole and spicy sauces on the side. Tacos start at 50 pesos (2,2€) per unit and 170 pesos (7,5€) per order of four.
Practical Tips
The drinks are particularly nice at La TaquerÍa. They have homemade lemonades, fresh juices, craft beers, and smoothies. The pomelada – a grapefuit lemonade with basil – is particularly delicious.
El Canastón
Finally, this spot is a true authentic hidden gem. El Canastón serves a special type of tacos, tacos de canasta, which are usually sold on the streets of Mexican cities. They are softer than most tacos and are filled with warm stewed dishes. This place is the epitome of comfort food, Mexican edition.
Menu
The menu varies daily, depending on availability and seasons. Most of the time, they will serve tacos with fillings such as pollo en barbacoa, mole rojo con pollo, and chaya con huevo. They also offer quesadillas, platillos, and more. Their fresh waters are absolutely delicious – my favourite is the horchata flavour. Tacos start at 180 pesos (8€) for a set of four units.
Practical Tips
There is barely ever anyone in this little restaurant, but don’t be deceived, the food is of the highest quality. It is also quite rich, therefore I recommend 3-4 units per person. Every order comes with fresh salsa and candied veggies flavoured with clove (yum).
In conclusion, these are the best tacos in Tulum for authenticity, taste, and freshness. Put your hands at work and let the sauce drip down your fingers for the full experience. Let me know if you try any of them!
