The Best Places to Visit in the Yucatan Peninsula

The Yucatan Peninsula is a tropical gem that comprises the south east of Mexico, as well as Guatemala and Belize. It features Mayan pyramids telling stories of a lost civilization, crystal-clear cenotes with fresh water, lush jungle, as well as pristine beaches with colourful fish and turtles. To me, it is the epitome of Caribbean paradise. The Yucatan also has a rich culture of relaxation, care, and connection with nature. It has beautiful luxurious hotels as well as traditional accommodation to cater all budgets.

The places selected on this page are chosen for their natural beauty and authenticity, based on my own experience. If you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

El Cuyo

We start at the North of the Yucatan Peninsula with the idyllic near-island of El Cuyo. It is a small and rather quiet fisherman village with virgin beaches and loads of untouched nature. Its windy beaches are famous for kitesurfing and it has a very laid-back atmosphere, perfect to relax and explore nature.

What to do in El Cuyo:

  • stay at Hotel Dos Mares for epic 360 views from sunrise to sunset
  • eat at Mowgli restaurant for Mexican fusion food worth a Michellin star
  • watch the sunset at El Cuyo Mirador for magical views over the lagoon
  • have the best coffee in town at Anahata
  • get kite surf lessons or beach service at LunArena

Holbox

The island of Holbox is a hippie paradise for anyone looking for breathtaking beach views. It has some of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve seen in my life! The island is a popular spot but cars are not allowed, hence it has preserved a bohemian atmosphere. It is accessible by ferry from the town of Chiquila.

What to do in Holbox:

  • walk in the shallow water from Holbox beach to Punta Mosquito to see flamingo and wildlife
  • watch the sunset with a fresh margarita at Playa Punta Cocos
  • book a boat tour to see whale sharks (from June to September)
  • stay at Casa HX for a quiet nest with rooftop
  • grab a bike and tour the island for tacos
  • dance all night long at the Hot Corner

Cozumel

I was not expecting much of this island which gained popularity as a touristic spot in the 1960s and 1970s. I was blown away by its casual vibes and its charming simplicity. It is the perfect spot to go on snorkelling expeditions (hello turtles!) and stroll around town for cheap yet unique souvenirs. It is notably safe and tranquil compared to other places in Mexico. It is accessible by ferry via Playa Del Carmen.

What to do in Cozumel:

  • stay at Illa Boutique Hotel for a central location yet quiet and cosy environment
  • book a boat tour to snorkel in the reefs of Palancar, Colombia, and El Cielito
  • sip on a cocktail and snack on seafood at Alberto’s Beach
  • walk around the centre between C. 1 Sur and C. 6 Norte to find local crafts
  • have dinner at La Clasica in the centre
  • go for a day excursion to Isla de la Pasión

Tulum

Tulum has become a global hotspot for travellers seeking luxury and prime entertainment, but it is also full of hidden gems and natural wonders. Beyond the parties and resorts, Tulum offers a myriad of holistic experiences as well as a warm and welcoming community of digital nomads.

What to do in Tulum:

  • visit the Mayan Ruins early in the morning
  • stay at KAN or MISTIQ for epic views and comfort without breaking the bank
  • go for an adventure in the reserve of Sian Ka’an, where you’ll find crocodiles and manatees
  • experience a traditional Temazcal ceremony at Espiritu Wellness (kind of like a sauna)
  • go for a yoga class and brunch at Holistika
  • visit the natural canals and ruins of Muyil
  • spend the day at the beach or at a cenote

The Ultimate Guide to Tulum

I’ve gathered all my tips in this guide after living in Tulum for years. It has all the information you need to make the most of your time in the Rivera Maya: how to get there, how to move around, safety tips, where to stay, and what to do!

Coba

Coba, once a major Mayan city-state, hides in the middle of the Yucatan jungle. It has impressive pyramids among a city-like structure and a vast network of ancient roads. It is a well-preserved archeological site, older than the famous Chichen Itza and much more peaceful than the latter. Perfect for a day trip to learn about Mayan history.

Tips for visiting Coba:

  • pack water and mosquito repellent
  • arrive early to beat the crowds and see wildlife such as monkeys and birds
  • rent a bicycle or a tuk-tuk to tour the property
  • visit the lake and cenotes nearby

Ik Kil

Ik Kil is by far the most beautiful and fascinating cenote I’ve seen in the Yucatan Peninsula. It is 25 metres below ground but open to the sky and surrounded by the lushest vegetation you’ll ever see. It was an important place of rituals for the Mayas, just a few kilometres away from Chichen Itza.

Tips for visiting cenotes:

  • most entrance fees are between 5-20 EUR
  • deep cenotes require you to wear a life jacket
  • sunscreen and mosquito spray are forbidden
  • you can bring your own snorkelling kit
  • the water is usually very cold and very clean
  • there are often wildlife in cenotes, including fish and turtles

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a massive archaeological site in the Yucatan Peninsula, once a thriving Mayan city. It’s famous for its iconic pyramid, one of the new seven wonders of the world. Chichen Itza was a major political, religious, and commercial center, with a long history spanning centuries. It is now a very popular tourism spot all year-round.

Tips to visit Chichen Itza:

  • arrive at opening time to avoid crowds
  • bring sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water – it’s really hot out there!
  • wear comfortable shoes to walk around
  • explore the whole complex and take time to discover each structure
  • consider an audio or visual guide to learn about the rich history of the site

Bacalar

Bacalar is a town in the South of Mexico known for its stunning lagoon, nicknamed the “Lake of Seven Colors” because of its mesmerizing shades of blue. Most beautiful waters I’ve seen! It offers a laid-back vibe compared to bigger tourist spots, perfect for relaxing by the water, exploring the town’s colourful streets, and soaking up the natural beauty.

What to do in Bacalar:

  • stay at Azul Nomeolvides for an unforgettable experience in connection with nature
  • visit Casa Arabe for a lounge day with epic views of the lagoon
  • eat at La Playita for the best Mexican food
  • explore the lagoon with a kayak at sunrise
  • visit the Rapidos de Bacalar to see stromatolites (but don’t touch them!)
