[updated February 2026]
Tulum is a charming coastal town in Mexico known for its stunning beaches, wellness community, and vibrant party scene. It’s easy to get lost in the countless amount of restaurants and miss the opportunity of enjoying delicious authentic Mexican food. Since living part-time in Tulum, I have been looking for the best local culinary experiences. In this blog post, I highlight my favourite restaurants in Tulum that offer the finest, most authentic Mexican meals.
Al Agavero
El Agavero is a relaxed gastro-cultural spot in La Veleta celebrating Oaxacan flavours and Mexican traditions. They mix ancestral cooking with modern mixology and a stylish atmosphere, always respecting ingredients and traditions. It’s a warm, vibrant place where great food, culture, and creativity come together for a truly tasty experience. Fantastic for a nice dinner as a couple or in groups.
Taqueria Honorio
Taquería Honorio is a Tulum institution, famous for its slow-cooked cochinita, lechón, and other Yucatán specialities served in soft, handmade tortillas. It has a no-frills, local vibe: plastic tables, bustling energy, and food so good there’s always a line, even early in the morning. Come hungry, grab a few tacos and a fresh juice, and you’ll understand why it’s a favourite among locals and travellers alike.
Burrito Amor
Burrito Amor is one of Tulum’s most beloved staples, known for its wholesome, flavour-packed burritos wrapped in coconut-flour tortillas and filled with fresh local ingredients. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, making it an easy go-to for breakfast, lunch, or a quick bite before heading to the beach. Don’t miss their smoothies and aguas frescas (especially the lime and cucumber one) perfect for cooling off in Tulum’s tropical heat.
Deli Fresh
Deli Fresh is a small, family-run restaurant in the town of Tulum with a menu featuring traditional Mexican food: chiles rellenos, quesadillas, aguachiles, guacamole, … The dishes are prepared with the freshest ingredients. The restaurant also has a large selection of aguas frescas to choose from. Lovely for a quick bite, no frills.
La Suculenta
La Suculenta is a vegan Mexican restaurant in the centre of town (probably my favourite!). It specialises in tamales, those delicious warm cakes made of cornflour, veggies, beans, rice, and spices. Feels like a special treasure. They also have super tasty tacos and enchiladas! Perfect for a cute lunch break in town.
Las Cazuelas
An authentic, no frills style of Mexican cuisine made of “cazuelas”, slow-cooked Mexican dishes which they serve in handmade tortillas. The restaurant is run by a local family who has been there for many years. It’s a very popular place for locals. The restaurant closes when the dishes of the day are finished, which is usually around 15:00.
Mil Amores
Mil Amores is a popular eatery in Tulum that serves classic Mexican dishes. The restaurant has a diverse menu that features tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, and other traditional Mexican dishes. The restaurant is in the centre of Tulum, strategically located at the crossing of many other iconic restaurants, bars, and shops. Great for lunch and dinner.
Los Morros
Los Morros is a classic seafood spot beloved across southern Mexico, serving ultra-fresh dishes in every form imaginable: bright ceviches, fried octopus, oysters, and shrimp cooked all sorts of ways. The La Veleta location adds its own twist with a laid-back pool that will make your lunch stretch into a lazy afternoon. The vibes are fun and colourful. The drinks are massive and the horchata is a must, best enjoyed while dipping your toes in the pool.
