Discover the Hidden Beauty of Lake Komani in Albania

Located in the remote Northern Albanian Alps, Lake Komani is a true hidden gem that offers an unforgettable escape into nature. During our adventures through the County of Shkodër, we were captivated by the lake’s stunning scenery, which reminded me of the majestic Norwegian fjords and the idyllic islands of Thailand. Despite its isolated location, Lake Komani is well worth the journey for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience. From breathtaking boat tours to authentic Albanian hospitality, this region has so much to offer. Join me as I recount my journey and provide practical advice for anyone planning to explore this remarkable destination.

Lake Komani, formed by the construction of a dam on the Drin River, is surrounded by towering mountains and lush greenery, including wild berries, fruit trees, mint, and herbs of all kinds. The lake’s (fresh) emerald waters snake through narrow gorges, creating a landscape that is both dramatic and serene.

The journey to Lake Komani from Shkodër is an adventure in itself, taking you through remote villages and along winding roads that offer glimpses of the region’s rugged beauty. The road to Koman can be challenging, particularly the last stretch, which is poorly maintained.

However, the effort is rewarded with views that are nothing short of spectacular. The isolation of the region adds to its charm, offering a peaceful retreat away from the bustle of everyday life.

Where to stay in Koman?

In Koman, accommodation options are limited, but what we found was truly special. We stayed at Docaj B&B, a charming bed and breakfast run by a warm Albanian couple who treated us like family. The hospitality at Docaj B&B was unmatched, with our hosts preparing delicious meals using locally sourced ingredients and welcoming us like family. They don’t speak English but are proficient users of Google Translate and were trying their best to say our names and greet us in our mother tongue.

We enjoyed each of our meals with stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The rooms were simple yet comfortable, providing the perfect base for exploring the area. We shared our bathroom with one other couple who was there at the same time, without problem. The garden had several areas where you can relax and enjoy the views with the calming sound of the water and a never-ending supply of fresh fruit.

Staying at Docaj B&B felt like being welcomed into a home rather than just a place to sleep, and it added an authentic touch to our experience in Koman. The price for a bed was also extremely cheap: 15EUR per person per night, including breakfast. Unparalleled!

What to do in Koman?

The highlight of our trip to Lake Komani was undoubtedly a boat tour of the lake, which offers some of the most breathtaking views in Albania. We took a tour that departed from Koman at 9:00 am and journeyed to the stunning Shala River. We used Miki Tours, as they offered the best value for money. Make sure to arrive with plenty of time in advance as the departure point gets chaotic in the morning, especially if you need to find parking!

The boat ride itself was a visual feast, with towering cliffs and emerald waters creating a mesmerising backdrop. It takes about one hour to reach the Shala River and, contrary to some reviews I read online, the lake was pretty clean and the waters were clear.

Once we arrived at the Shala River, we had several hours to explore. The river’s turquoise waters are incredibly inviting, though very cold, making them perfect for a refreshing swim on a hot day. I recommend walking a bit further from the main drop-off point to find quieter spots where you can truly soak in the natural beauty. The same boat picked us up at 15:00 and we were back in Koman by 16:00.

The Ultimate Guide to the Balkans

I’ve gathered all my tips in this guide after visiting Morocco from North to South. It has all the information you need to make the most of your time in the Berber country: its history, how to move around, safety tips, where to stay, and what to do!

Practical Tips

Traveling to Lake Komani requires some planning, but it’s well worth the effort. Start your journey in Shkodër, and be prepared for a two-hour drive to Koman. The road is rough, especially the last 60 minutes, so take it slow or consider renting an SUV for added comfort and safety. Avoid driving at night, as the roads can be tricky to navigate in the dark.

Once in Koman, plan to stay at least one night to fully recover from the drive and enjoy the surroundings. If you’re taking a boat tour, arrive at the departure point early, as parking can be chaotic. However, most tour operators waited for late arrivals and were very understanding. Prepare mosquito spray, water bottles, and sunscreen as your best allies. Consider bringing water shoes to walk freely in the lake and river, of which the bottom is made of small rocks

Don’t forget to bring cash, as card payments are not widely accepted (but Euros are), and pack for varying weather conditions, as temperatures can change quickly in the mountains. We did not need a jacket while we were there in August but the nights did get more chilly.
