The increasing breadth of choices when it comes to bars is not making it any easier to choose between so may different options. Fear not, thirsty adventurers! This guide will navigate you through Tulum’s vibrant drinking scene, from beachside beats to jungle-hidden gems. The perfect spots to grad a drink and try local delicacies.
Parque del Jaguar, the former 'Public Beach' and the Mayan ruins
This stretch of the beach is part of the Natural Parque del Jaguar, for which you must pay 60 pesos to enter. The atmosphere is laid-back, family-friendly, and nature-oriented. When reaching the main roundabout of Tulum’s beach, turn left and prepare some cash for the entrance fee collected by local staff.
Canova Beach: Tranquil and sophisticated, Canova Beach has stunning ocean views, comfy daybeds, and a delectable Italian-inspired menu. Sip on cocktails while people-watching with the crashing sound of the waves. Excellent service and friendly atmosphere.
IKAL: IKAL is a beach hotel and day club known for its wellness activities, hippie vibes, and energetic atmosphere. Perfect for families with kids and groups. Quench your thirst with a Matcha Mama smoothie or a passionfruit margarita while watching a beach volley match.
Hotel Zone, towards the nature reserve of Sian Ka'an
This upscale area caters to an eclectic crowd with chic bars, beach clubs, and trendy restaurants. It gets very lively at night, perfect for the start of a wild ride. Here, you’ll find mainly tourists and seasonal visitors looking for fun and connection. When reaching the main beach roundabout, turn right.
Panamera: Immerse yourself in the magic scenery of Hotel Panamera’s new rooftop, an elevated bar perfectly suited for sunset drinks. I highly recommend to try have a look at their website for activities, as they regularly organise cultural events.
Casa Jaguar: This is a classic of Tulum’s nightlife. Casa Jaguar is a laid-back restaurant and bar with an extensive cocktail menu. Savour expertly crafted drinks amidst the lively ambiance, perfect for the start of a long evening out.
Gitano / Gitano Beach: Gitano is an institution in Tulum, with two distinct experiences. The jungle location features a mystical vibe with live music and traditional Mayan cocktails, while Gitano Beach offers beachside bliss with stunning views and refreshing drinks. Try “Kisses in the Car” for a spicy kick.
La Veleta, an up-and-coming trendy hotspot
Venture beyond the shore to discover this trendy neighbourhood around the Calle 7 Sur, featuring a mix of bars and restaurants catering to a young and lively crowd. You’ll find a lot of expats choosing to reside in this neighbourhood and enjoy its developing eclectic architecture.
El Agavero: Immerse yourself in a beautifully designed restaurant with an authentic feel. El Agavero offers a wide selection of unique cocktails and delicacies, specialising in local Mezcal, a smokey type of Tequila. The perfect spot for a special occasion in an intimate and trendy environment.
La Pizzine: Grab a slice and a beer at La Pizzine, a super popular spot with a laid-back vibe and mythical rooftop parties. Enjoy live music performances on select nights, adding to the energetic atmosphere.
Once: This rooftop bar organises a wide range of activities throughout the week, from salsa and bachata dance classes to breath work and ice baths, while providing a co-working space during the day. Perfect to meet like-minded people and network.
Tulum Pueblo, the centre of town
You’ll find some of my favourite hidden gems in the heart of town, along the stretch of Avenida Tulum. Over here, you’ll find local Mayan populations, seasonal workers, and full-time residents from around the world. The atmosphere is vibrant and prices are very affordable.
La Guarida: This speakeasy-style bar offers a unique and intimate atmosphere. Hidden behind a nondescript storefront, La Guarida boasts expertly crafted cocktails and a focus on quality ingredients. I recommend exploring the many different areas, including the vinyl records room.
Chan Cafecito: This charming miniature café right off of La Guarida offers a cozy and authentic experience. Sip on their signature Carajillo (the Mexican version of an Espresso Martini) or a shot of Mezcal while on the go, the perfect spot for a quick and lively pre-game amidst the buzzing streets.
La Pizzine TRIA: Enjoy a true slice of Tulum’s latest hotspot at this local favorite. Sample their delicious pizzas alongside refreshing craft beers or local mezcal cocktails in a casual and friendly setting. Don’t miss their Monday parties.
Aldea Zama, the chic and lush residential neighbourhood
This upscale residential neighbourhood offers a variety of restaurants and bars in a more quiet and spacious area of Tulum, with lush vegetation and a few stretches of jungle. You’ll mostly find full-time residents of Tulum who live in the area or come for its restaurants.
Cinco: This restaurant provides an authentic atmosphere and delicious cocktails in the heart of Aldea Zama. A great choice for drinks with your colleagues, family, or neighbours.
Arthouse: This restaurant is set in a private condo-apartment complex, offering an intimate and luxurious setting. Perfect for a romantic date or a small group.
Leblon: This hidden gem offers a lovely escape in the heart of Aldea Zama. Sip on refreshing cocktails and local Mezcal amidst the greenery and enjoy the sophisticated atmosphere.
