About the Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast, located in the beautiful southern region of Italy, is a coastal area that attracts travellers with its rich history and awe-inspiring views. Along the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Amalfi Coast boasts a profound historical significance that dates back to ancient times when it served as a bustling maritime trade route. Today, remnants of its storied past can be seen in the charming villages that dot the coastline, where medieval architecture and ancient ruins stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history.
One cannot help but be mesmerized by the unique visual spectacle that unfolds along the Amalfi Coast. The coastal towns, with their pastel-coloured houses gently cascading down mountains, create a stunning view captivating the hearts of all who visit. The cliffs of Monti Lattari shelter hidden coves and tucked-away sea caves that invite exploration and wonder. As you wander through the narrow streets, the charm of this region becomes evident through the simple yet enchanting architectural beauty that adorns the buildings. Lemon trees, lively restaurants, stairs (lots of stairs) and hidden treasures await you in the corners of the Amalfi Coast.
About this Guide
Attracted by its visual splendor, 5 million of visitors walk the streets of the Amalfi Coast each year. Unfortunately, given its busy and touristic nature, Positano and many other towns of the coast have lost some of their charm. Venturing off the beaten path here opens up a world of possibilities, allowing you to discover the unique experiences that lie away from the tourist crowds. In these less-explored spots, you can immerse yourself in authentic cultural experiences, savoring the local cuisine, and connecting with the warmth and hospitality of the locals. Moreover, wandering off the tourist hotspots allows you to avoid exorbitant prices, making your journey all the more rewarding and budget-friendly.
So, embrace the allure of the Amalfi Coast and embark on an unforgettable journey filled with historical wonders, breathtaking views, and the joy of uncovering hidden gems that are sure to create lasting memories. Allow the enchanting Amalfi Coast to weave its magic on your heart and soul, as you immerse yourself in the true essence of this captivating coastal paradise.
1. Rent a boat in the port of Sorrento
To truly immerse yourself in the magical beauty of the Amalfi Coast, set sail from the picturesque town of Sorrento – a cheaper and quieter option than Amalfi or Salerno. This was our absolute favourite experience in the region. From the tranquility and freshness of the water, you can admire the wonderful views of Positano, Positano, Arienzo, Laurito, Praiano, Conca dei Marini, Amalfi, Atrani, and more. It was an unforgettable experience.
Agustin has a contact in Sorrento who rents boats which do not require a license (here) and are relatively easy to drive for connoisseurs or adventurers. To rent the boat from 10AM to 6PM, it cost us 300€. Upon return, you re-fill the tank which costs around 75€. We had packed some sandwiches, water, a bottle of wine, some snacks, and towels. The boat had a very good speaker so we could play our favourite music and have a little boat party of our own.
Those are the water stops I recommend the most:
- Bagni Regina Giovanna, a secluded creek with a natural pool encircled by ancient ruins, a spot that feels like a time portal to the past. This is also where we saw dolphins!
- Cascatella di Punta Lagno, a tucked-away waterfall cascading into the sea, beckoning you to take a refreshing dip in its turquoise waters (only accessible by boat).
- Positano and Praiano, charming and iconic coastal villages with colourful pastel houses rippling down the hillside, perfect for a romantic stop and pictures.
- Fiordo di Furore, a stunning fjord flaunting crystal-clear waters and soaring cliffs connected by an arched bridge, guaranteed to leave you spellbound. Inside, there is a small beach and a village.
- Amalfi, a picturesque and colourful town with a Cathedral standing out in its centre and majestic mountains in the background.
This experience was pure happiness and will definitely go down as one of the best days of my life. Being in on the water and able to jump and see small creeks, cascades, and rock formations from up close was truly magical.
2. Visit natural caves in Conca Dei Marini
Conca Dei Marini, a hidden gem nestled along the Amalfi Coast, has a unique charm and unspoiled beauty. This small village exudes an authentic Italian ambiance, far from the bustling tourist crowds. With its quiet coves, crystalline waters, and breathtaking sea caves, Conca Dei Marinioffers an idyllic escape for those seeking a peaceful and immersive experience on the Amalfi Coast.
One of Conca Dei Marini’s main draws is the enchanting Emerald Grotto (Grotta dello Smeraldo), a natural cave accessible by boat or via a short walk down a stairway from the main road. Inside, sunlight filtering through an underwater cavity illuminates the water with a mesmerizing emerald glow, creating a magical and surreal atmosphere.
Aside from its captivating natural wonders, Conca Dei Marini also boasts historical and cultural gems, such as the charming Church of San Pancrazio and the medieval Torre Saracena, both perched on the cliffside. Strolling through the narrow alleyways and admiring the traditional white-washed houses adorned with vibrant flowers, visitors can immerse themselves in the true spirit of the dolce vita.
3. Shop handmade ceramics in Vietri sul Mare
We’ve seen ceramics for sale everywhere in Italy. However, the best quality and prices we found were in Vietri sul Mare, which the town has been producing since the 14th century. It has been creating unique dishes, cups, and tiles for the region for centuries. In the 17th century, Vietrese Ceramics started featuring more accomplished forms and artistic decorations that led to the creation of objects related to religious worship such as domestic fonts, majolica tiles with a religious subject, panels and the votive niches still scattered in the alleys of the area.
There are many, many different ceramic shops in Vietri sul Mare. The establishments we preferred were called Ceramiche Sara (here) and Ceramiche Bucciarelli (here). They had a variety of products, small and big, at affordable prices.
Ceramics are crafted through a multi-step process that starts with shaping clay and then firing it at high temperatures. Artisans prepare the clay, shape it using techniques like hand-building or wheel-throwing, and allow it to dry slowly. After the first firing, called bisque firing, the ceramics are glazed to add color and texture. A final firing at higher temperatures vitrifies the glaze and clay, resulting in durable and beautiful ceramic objects ready for everyday use or decorative purposes. This time-honored and intricate process showcases the skill and creativity of artisans in producing unique ceramic pieces.
Here are 5 tips to recognise high-quality ceramics while you are in Vietri sul Mare:
- Look for smooth and even surfaces: High-quality ceramics should have smooth and even surfaces without any cracks, bumps, or imperfections. Run your fingers over the piece to ensure it feels consistent and well-crafted.
- Check the glaze: Examine the glaze closely for uniformity and a glossy finish. Avoid ceramics with uneven or drippy glaze, as it may indicate poor craftsmanship.
- Tap for resonance: Gently tap the ceramic object with your fingers. A high-quality piece will produce a clear and resonant sound, while a lower-quality item might sound dull or muted.
- Assess the weight: High-quality ceramics are generally heavier due to the density of the clay and the thickness of the glaze. Lightweight pieces may indicate thinner walls, potentially making them more fragile.
- Inspect the details: Pay attention to the fine details and craftsmanship. Well-made ceramics will exhibit precise designs, crisp edges, and consistent patterns. Although most pieces are painted by hand, avoid pieces with visible irregularities or uneven designs.
Watch the sunset from the "Path of the Gods"
The “Path of the Gods” is a hiking trail which begins in Bomerano, stretching all the way to Positano via Colle Serra and Li Cannati, covering a distance of 8 kilometers with a moderate level of difficulty. If you keep to the main section in the heights of the Amalfi Coast, between Agerola and Nocelle, the trail is only 6 kilometers long and takes 90 minutes to complete.
Lost in the hills of Agerola is the Grand Hotel Sant’Orsola, one of the hidden gems we discovered on our journey through the Amalfi Coast. It is a popular venue for weddings and reception, which speaks volume about the epic sea views and romantic atmosphere. The hotel itself is a little rustic but its retro architecture creates a unique charm worth of a movie set. We felt like in an Italian version of “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.
Many visitors remain in the popular towns and beaches of Positano or Amalfi, unaware of the magnificent views that the cliffs of the coast offer. Once higher up, you have fresher air, less tourists, and breathtaking views, making this location a truly unique one to stop by during your trip on the Amalfi Coast.
Even if you aren’t an avid walker, I highly recommend trying a trail on your holiday. It requires a bit of preparation (wear a hat, sunscreen, pack water) but is so worth the experience. Our favourite moments on the coast were always in the hills, because they allow to truly appreciate the beauty of what’s beneath you — a wonderful, magical, unique planet.
Swim beneath the majestic Fiordo di Furore
Fiordo di Furore is a must-visit destination on the Amalfi Coast, offering a one-of-a-kind experience that sets it apart from other coastal spots. It is accessible by car or public transportation, with parking available nearby. Once you arrive, you’ll be mesmerised by the view of the fjord nestled between the towering cliffs, creating an enchanting and secluded atmosphere.
Beyond its picturesque beauty, Fiordo di Furore has a rich history that adds to its allure. In the past, it was used as a natural harbour for local fishermen, who sought refuge in its protective cove. The area was also known for its production of tuna, adding to its significance as an essential source of sustenance for the community.
Swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the fjord is an experience like no other. As you descend the steep staircase down to sea level, you’ll find a unique swimming spot surrounded by impressive cliffs, creating a natural amphitheater of serenity. Whether you’re diving from the cliffs or simply enjoying a refreshing dip, the fjord offers an intimate and unforgettable setting.
Fiordo di Furore’s secluded beauty, historical significance, and unparalleled swimming opportunities make it an exceptional and must-see destination for anyone exploring the enchanting Amalfi Coast.
