Overview

Tulum Nightlife Areas

Tulum is made of four main areas: the beach, the town (also known as pueblo or centro), La Veleta, and Aldea Zama. These neighbourhoods have different nightlife atmospheres and will accommodate virtually all tastes and budgets.

Generally, the beach area offers the most high-end parties with renowned artists and prime entertainment. The style is usually bohemian chic, featuring many music styles from electronic music to live jazz concerts. You’ll find some of the finest dinner experiences in the beach area too. The town of Tulum, situated a 10-min drive from the beach, offers more eclectic and affordable nightlife with a multitude of restaurants and bars playing music such as reggaeton, deep house, and latin beats. It’s always busy, all-year round. Aldea Zama and La Veleta are mainly residential neighbourhoods but they feature up-and-coming night scenes with avant-garde restaurants and bars as well as a myriad of splendid villas where Tulum’s legendary after parties often take place.

Aside from those four main areas, Tulum’s nightlife expands to other less populated areas, particularly for festivals and private events that take place around cenotes (natural pools of fresh water), in the natural reserve of Sian Ka’an, or deep inside the jungle.

Timing

In Tulum, most beach clubs are open from morning until sunset (around 6pm) with a few exceptions such as Vagalume, which stays open until 1am, sometimes 3am for special events.

People usually have dinner around 8pm and go for drinks around 10pm. Most restaurants and bars are open until 1am, but a few places remain open until 5am, such as Bonbonniere (beach) and Santino (centro).

Payment and Prices

Most restaurants and clubs accept card payment. Tipping (10-20%) is customary but not mandatory. Always check the amount on the payment terminal before proceeding!

The prices for drinks and event tickets vary widely. Lots of venues and events are free, but some do charge an entrance fee. For music festivals during high season, expect to pay minimum 4,000 MXN per ticket. Drinks are affordable in town (around 200 MXN for a cocktail) and more pricy on the beach (around 500 MXN for a cocktail).

Transport

If you’re planning on moving around by car, note that some places have valet parking and that there are private parkings around the beach area as well as the centre. Expect to pay around 200 MXN for a parking spot. If driving, I recommend refraining from eye-catchy behaviour (e.g. loud music and speeding), which will most likely result in being stopped by the traffic police (transito).

For taxis, count at least 300 MXN per trip, regardless of the distance. Some accept card payment. Make sure to ask and agree on a price as you enter in the taxi.

Tulum is generally safe, but avoid walking alone in dark or isolated streets, especially at night. If you notice anything unusual, call 911.

Tulum Starter Pack

This starter pack is your shortcut to feeling at home in Tulum: no guesswork, all the essentials. Inside, you’ll find my favourite food stops, handy transport tips, grocery hacks, and clear guidance on beach access and the Jaguar Park. It’s designed to help you settle in fast and enjoy Tulum like a pro from day one.

Dresscode

Most of Tulum’s restaurants and clubs are flexible on dress code. The atmosphere is generally relaxed and styles vary widely. Unless you’re going to a special event, shirts and heels aren’t mandatory. Especially if you plan on going for dinner or a party on the beach, I’d recommend comfortable and breathable clothes and shoes: you’ll most likely end up dancing barefoot and it gets hot out there. The style of Tulum is bohemian chic, featuring long dresses, capes, and hats of all kinds. Beachwear is allowed in most places.

Rservations

If you are planning a fun night out you should definitely make a reservation as some of the most popular restaurants and bars of Tulum get booked well in advance, especially during the festive season (December-January).

Events Calendar

I highly recommend to follow the work of Tulum’s Insiders on Instagram. They have a mountain of tips on how to enjoy Tulum’s nightlife like a local, and share a weekly events calendar.

Tulum Festivals

A classic element of Tulum nightlife, festivals are maybe the reason why you heard of Tulum in the first place, seeing their awe-inspiring scenes in the media. There are plenty to choose from, but these ones are the most famous:

Zamna

Zamna is the most iconic and biggest music festival in Tulum. It became an international sensation and now runs several times a year, and around the world. In Tulum, Zamna takes place over 2-3 weeks in January, the weekend of Easter, as well as other special occasions. It is always attracting very large crowds of electronic music lovers from the four corners of the world and DJs such as Tale of Us, Michael Bibi, and the Keinemusik crew.

You can buy day passes, multi-day passes, as well a season pass, with prices ranging between 55 USD (early bird) and thousands of dollars for the best places tables. The festival itself takes place around a cenote and usually has 2-3 scenes where artists play simultaneously, with different sizes and atmospheres.

Pro tip: pre-game in town, skip lines and go around 1AM with plenty of energy to spend an unforgettable night dancing beyond sunrise!

Mayan Warrior

Mayan Warrior is a famous art car from the Burning Man festival, particularly recognisable by its fire shows. They visit Tulum every year around January. A particular feature of Mayan Warrior is that the lineup is never announced. It usually includes 3 artists such as Oliver Koletzki and Julya Karma playing organic and melodic house music.

Set Underground

Set Underground organises festivals and events in the US and Mexico all year-round. It’s a smaller scale than Zamna and Day Zero but in a more intimate setting, in surprising locations. It never disappoints when it comes to artists selection, with DJs like Bora Uzer, Blondish, and Audiofly.

Tehmplo

Tehmplo is a large-scale event venue in Tulum, next to the beach. They organise parties a few times per year, with DJs such as Solomun, Guy Gerber, and Ameme.

Day Zero

Day Zero is a special event created by deep house DJ Damian Lazarus, famous for his shamanic style. The atmosphere is mystical and avant-gardiste, similar to that in festivals such as Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle, or Gardens of Babylon. It has fantastic light installations set around three stages located in the middle of the jungle, with cenotes and palm trees. It takes place over one weekend in early to mid-January.

Day Zero feels like a little festival village, with food trucks and vendors of all kinds. To access it, you must take a shuttle close to Tulum’s ruins. Its unique atmosphere creates the perfect opportunity for meeting new people, dancing, celebrating and sharing a moment together at one of the most legendary raves of the electronic music scene. Prepare for a night you’ll never forget!

Pro tip: prepare for a full experience, go early and familiarise yourself with the environment, stay until sunrise with Damian Lazarus for the peak of Tulum’s high season.
