The 5 best Greek restaurants in Mykonos for authentic cuisine

It’s easy to get lost in the labyrinth of charming streets in Mykonos. However, it’s harder to find authentic greek restaurants serving fresh food without the exorbitant prices so characteristic of the island. After a month in Mykonos, I can safely say these are the 5 best Greek restaurants in Mykonos: delicious authentic food, great service, and affordable prices.

Greek taverns are no-frills restaurants serving typical Greek dishes: souvlaki (gyros), tzatziki, melitzanosalata (eggplant salad), choriatiki (greek salad), moussaka, dolmadakia (Stuffed Grape Leaves), … often accompanied by fresh seafood and a nice selection of Greek beers and wines.

1. Rizes Farmstead

Rizes is the ultimate Greek cuisine experience in Mykonos. This traditional farmstead hidden in the mountains of the island offers cooking classes, folklore exhibitions, rooms, and a delicious restaurant.

When you notice there are more Greek people than foreigners, you know you’ve found the spot, right? Rizes is surrounded by fields of vegetables and cattle providing fresh ingredients. The location feels large yet cosy, with many little spots where to sit or play, whether you are in a small or big group.

The restaurant is run by a local family and carefully picks its Greek staff. Their goal was to recreate an original Mykonian farmstead experience with food from the garden to the table. They definitely succeeded! We liked to wander around the premises whilst waiting for our order. On the farm, you’ll find adorable kittens, tortoises, horses, sheep, goats, … surrounded by beautifully decor.

Practical Tips

At Rizes, you’ll be offered more special dishes off the menu than whatever is à la carte, and we love that. Dishes are between 10-25 EUR. Open from midday until 21:00.

2. Kiki’s tavern

This is probably the most famous Greek spot on the island, so prepare for hours of queue as they don’t take reservations (tip: bring some cards or a book). The restaurant oversees a beautiful creek next to Agios Sostis (one of my favourite beaches in Mykonos). Heavenly views, the calming sound of the waves, and the warm and smiling welcoming of the staff makes it somehow a wonderful experience for everyone.

Kiki’s tavern will reward your patience by offering homemade seasonal delicacies. On the menu: grilled meat & fish, typical Greek appetizers, and a wonderful salad bar. No frills, not many options, just simple delicious Greek food. Kiki’s tavern is no longer a kept secret. Celebrities and famous chefs come to taste its cuisine and greet its characteristic owners, emanating good vibes and creating a family-like atmosphere.

Ever wished you had a Greek cool mom? This is it.

Practical Tips

The tavern opens at 12:30 and closes at 19:00. Starters are between 6-14 EUR, grilled items go from 10-25 EUR. I highly recommend the salad bar (try their tabouleh and the wild rice salad) as well as the marinated pork chops.

Pssst… to avoid rush hours at Kiki’s, go after 17:00 🤫

3. To Apomero

This was our most-visited tavern in Mykonos. We came back… probably 5 or 6 times! The staff is friendly, the place is charming, and the food was simple and tasty. For a change, service was also extremely fast! This restaurant gets booked up quickly, so you might want to make a reservation or be ready to wait a little.

The menu offers all a the essentials of a Greek Tavern with some of the cheapest prices we’ve seen without compromising on quality. Portions are large and there are many options to suit all tastes, including Greek dishes but also some European classics such as spaghetti bolognese. A true gem!

Practical Tips

To Apomero (literally, the hidden one) is located in Ornos, a beach town more quiet than the old town Chora. There is a large parking next to the restaurant and many beautiful beaches only a few minutes from it. It is open every day (including Sundays) until 23:30.

Our personal favourites were the seafood spaghetti (16 EUR) and the pork gyros (8 EUR). We also loved their wine, grilled fish, and the complimentary dessert which accompanied all our meals.

4. Fokos Tavern

This beachfront restaurant is located on the east, more secluded side of Mykonos. You may want to fill in your gas tank before heading there. It is surrounded by nature and facing the beach of the same name. Peace and quiet guaranteed.

Fokos Tavern is run by a Mykonian family and is decorated with taste. The staff is friendly and polite. They use fresh ingredients and cook everything on the spot. You can peak into the kitchen while waiting for your food, as the kitchen door is open to the public.

The menu offers the classics of a Greek tavern: grilled meat and fish, different types of salads, seafood, and delicious wines. We’ve had the (by far) tastiest tarama salad there, as well as excellent fresh mussels.

Practical Tips

Fokos Tavern is open seven days a week from 13:00 to 19:00. The front row has a minimum spend of 25 EUR per person. Dishes range from 10 EUR to 30 EUR.

The restaurant also sells local porcelain dishes and jewellery – which is perfect for a holiday gift that is authentic and unique.

5. Limnios Tavern

Just a few minutes from the old town of Chora, Limnios is located close to the island’s harbour and oversees the beach Paralia Agios Stefanos. It is visited by many locals, which is always a great sign of quality. Limnios Tavern is a great choice if you want authenticity and stay within your budget without going far off the old town.

Besides its delicious and affordable food, Limnios’ sea view is probably its best selling point (especially at sunset). However, we loved to sit in the back garden of the restaurant, amongst locals and with a breeze of fresh air. It is beautiful yet simple.

The menu is a typical greek one. We had the mix of grilled local meat, which was delicious. The fries were tasty and crispy. We also tried the Mykonian lemon pie (on the picture), which was beyond anything I have ever tasted!!!

Practical Tips

Limnios Tavern is open every day from 16:00 to midnight, except on Sundays, when service starts at noon. Dishes were between 10-30 EUR.
