On this blog, I share about my work, personal reflections, and favourite resources.
I hope this space can help navigating some of the complexities of humankind.
Hello!
I’m Sophie, but my friends call me Pomme. I was born in Belgium, educated across Europe, and now exploring the world to understand how we can make it a better place.
I currently work as a doctoral researcher (PhD) at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs in The Hague. The core subjects of my research are geopolitics, tech and media policy, democracy, and international relations and security more broadly. In my PhD thesis, I analyse European responses to misinformation. I also teach undergraduate students and regularly participate in international events as speaker and moderator.
I hold a Masters degree (MPhil) in Politics from the University of Oxford and have a decade of experience as a consultant in public diplomacy, strategic communication, and global peace and security. Former clients include the European Commission and NATO.
Global Society
With the advances of technology and science, we become more aware of how connected we are, as individuals, states, and continents, but also as a planetary community. This impacts how we imagine solutions to political, economical, and social challenges.
As an expert in international security and global affairs, I explore how to create systems that benefit society at large. My articles delve into debates surrounding politics, technology, and security, analysing the role of Europe on the global stage.
I am fascinated by global information networks and how we can optimise them for public good.
Academia
Academia is the community of scholars working in educational institutions who engage in research, teaching, and other activities to advance knowledge in various disciplines.
As a social scientist, I have chosen a light approach to academia, one that pursues knowledge for its own sake rather than professional achievement. My key objective is to support exchange across multiple perspectives and disciplines, while promoting diverse and inclusive learning.
I’ve been so lucky to benefit from the support of incredible mentors throughout my academic career. I love to help fellow students and early-career scholars pursue their dreams.
Technology
Technology is everywhere around us. It’s evolving incredibly fast, with vast repercussions because of interconnected layers and embeddedness in social, economic, and political life.
Technology is more than innovation. It’s about how we live, connect, and make decisions, the tools and platforms we use to do so, and the actors and structures influencing us. From algorithmic amplification to quantum computing, technology shapes our societies in ways we’re only beginning to understand.

Travel is a doorway to empathy and awareness.
Discovering new parts of our beautiful planet is essential to nourish our mind and soul. I’ve visited over 40 countries and lived in five, therefore I consider myself an experienced traveller.
